Statistics on Allegations of Child Sexual Abuse in the Diocese of Kilmore: 15 November 2012 | Print |

  

This statement contains information on Kilmore diocesan priests. It also contains information regarding priests from Religious Orders and from other dioceses who at some time carried out short-term supply ministry without a formal appointment in the diocese, and against whom allegations were made, even where the allegation does not refer to their time in the diocese of Kilmore.

Based on the information currently available the following statistics have been compiled regarding the period between 1947 (the earliest year to which an allegation refers) and 15 November 2012.

 

Number of priests of the diocese against whom allegations have been made:  9

Three of these priests are deceased

Four are out of ministry: two of these have been laicised. 

Two are in ministry

Number of allegations against priests of the diocese:  13

Number of priests from other dioceses against whom allegations were made:  1

This priest had retired in the diocese. He is deceased.

Number of allegations made against priests from other dioceses:  1

Following Garda investigations (about which the diocese has been informed):

In 2 cases the Garda did not find evidence to proceed any further.

In 3 cases files were sent to the DPP.

    • In 2 of these 3 cases the DPP decided not to proceed
    •

In 1 case the DPP issued court proceedings leading to the conviction of the accused. This priest is currently serving a 5 year prison sentence.

Number of Religious priests against whom allegations were made:  3

Number of allegations against Religious priests received:  21

Two Religious priests, whose order is located in the diocese, were convicted in the courts.  One is deceased.

Number of Religious Brothers against whom allegations have been made:  3

Number of allegations made against Religious Brothers:  4

All allegations received have been reported to the statutory authorities.

 

Financial Information

Up to now the diocese has not paid compensation in relation to complaints of sexual abuse of a minor.  The diocese has paid €108,334 to meet part of the legal expenses of one claimant who sued the diocese jointly with other parties.

Apart from the above, the diocese has paid €197,467 on legal fees relating to clerical abuse. 

These figures relate to the period from 1997 to the end of 2011.
