There is a strong tradition that St. Patrick founded a church at Castletara at the centre of the oldest part of the cemetery. The present day St. Patrick’s Church was built in 1829, very near the site of the early Christian church. The cost of building the Church in 1829 was £650. When they were building the church they inserted an ancient stone head from the pre-Reformation church over the main entrance to the church. They also used the sandstone holy water fonts from the medieval church.

The church was built as a small, rectangular church with a small sanctuary at one end. Later, in 1886, another entrance, porch and gallery were added to the church. Extensive restoration work was carried out on the Church recently and it was finished in July of the Jubilee Year 2000. A brief history of the church and the parish was published to coincide with the rededication of the Church on 1st October 2000.
