The grounds of Saints Patrick & Felim Cathedral, Cavan, are a haven for biodiversity! The insects are basking in the splendour of it all! Birds are flitting here and there, chirping happily! The peaceful and tranquil setting elicit a sense of wonder and awe at the beauty of it all!
The recently planted ornamental trees are in flower and tiny fruitlets are forming which will provide a vital food source for pollinators and birds in the months ahead.
The grounds at the back of the Cathedral are being managed for biodiversity with a 6-8 week mowing regime in place and an abundance of native wildflowers including orchids and sweet Vernal-Grass are on display.
The traditional Irish wildflower meadow mix planted in 2024 is in full bloom with Oxeye Daisies leading the display. However, a look beneath the daisies, reveals Yellow Rattle, Black Meddick, Birdsfoot Trefoil, Creeping Buttercup, Lesser Knapweed, Corncockle, Greater Stitchwort, Wild Sorrel, Red Clover, and Common Vetch to name but a few.
The embankment at the top carpark is so rich in biodiversity that it commands the attention of the keen conservationist. Against a backdrop of established native trees are Dog Rose, Hogweed, Cows Parsley, Herb-Robert, Meadow Thistle, and Common Knapweed to name but a few.
Praise Be!!!
