St. Mary’s Church Bruskey replaced a post-penal thatched chapel, which was blown down on 6th January 1839. The stones from this chapel were reused in the construction of the new church. Work on St. Mary’s was completed between 1840 and 1843.

Major renovations, consisting of the construction of a new roof, porch, sanctuary, sacristy and gallery were undertaken by Fr. John McGauran in the early 1950s. St. Mary’s was rededicated on 24th May 1953. An interesting feature of the restored church was the Stations of the Cross, painted by a talented Dublin artist called J. O’Healy.

In 1993, further refurbishment was undertaken by Fr. Owen Collins. It included the provision of a side entrance and porch, a confessional room, an outdoor toilet, artistic panelling of the ceiling and sanctuary, mercury vapour lighting and an imaginative colour scheme. New pine seating replaced the original white deal pews. St. Mary’s celebrated its Sesquicentenary on 24th October 1993.

A wall plaque in the church remembers Fr. Stephen Clarke, a curate from 1913-1916, who was killed in action in France on 4th October 1917.
