The work of a Priest
Most priests in the diocese of Kilmore work in parishes as parish priests or curates.  Their mission is to bring the good news of the risen Lord to people.  The priests’ pastoral work includes providing for the sacramental needs of their parishioners: Sunday and weekday Masses, Baptisms, Confessions, Marriages and the Sacrament of the Sick.  Priests also provide pastoral care for those who are in need: the lonely, those who are troubled, the sick and the dying.  Many are involved in working with different groups within the parish: youth, choirs, prayer groups, Bible study and pilgrimages.

Priests work with Pastoral Committees and Finance Committees providing support and assistance for various projects in the parish.  Many are involved in the parochial primary school through the Board of Management.  Some priests work in second level schools as chaplains, teachers or catechists.  Priests find opportunities to use their varied and valuable talents in the course of their work in the parish or school.  A small number of priests work as hospital chaplains, in prison chaplaincy or are engaged in further studies.

Prayer for Vocation

Lord Jesus,
you said to your disciples:

“The harvest indeed is great
but the labourers are few.”
We ask that we may know
and follow the vocation
to which you have called us.
We pray for those called to serve:
those whom you have called,
those you are calling now,
and those you will call in the future.
May they be open and responsive
to the call of serving your people.

Amen.
