At the launch of the JP2 Awards programme. on 26th January 2011 Bishop O’Reilly said that he “ regarded the award as ‘a very concrete way of inviting young people to reflect more deeply on their faith and take part in activities which will be engaging and rewarding for themselves and at the same time be of service and benefit to others.
Bishop Leo with recipients of Pope John Paul II Awards
On 18th October 2012 20 young people from the diocese were awarded Silver and Gold awards in recognition of their selfless contribution to their parish and wider community.
Bishop Leo, in his address, complimented and congratulated all the young people receiving the Pope John Paul II award.
He paid tribute to the generosity and the initiative of the Knights of St Columbanus in funding and promoting this initiative.
He thanked all the leaders, teachers, priests and parish personnel who mentored the young people and guided them in carrying out the work they undertook. He reminded them that their contribution was also crucial to the success of the project.

The bishop commended Clare Coyle, Diocesan Youth Worker for Kilmore, for taking on this project enthusiastically and carrying it through every effectively. He said that it gave hope to even greater participation in the awards in the years ahead.
Neil Doherty, Knight of St. Columbanus, Cavan.
Neil Doherty, Secretary of the Knights of St. Columbanus, in his key note address spoke of his experience growing up in the Church community in Cavan and the various experiences he had in participating in the life of the parish. He impressed upon those present that in challenging life situations their faith would be questioned and it was only through prayer and devoted religious practice that they could be assured of the strength from God they would need on these occasions.
