come follow me

The World Day of Prayer for Vocations was celebrated on Sunday 11 May this year, the Fourth Sunday of Easter. The World Day of Prayer for Vocations is also known as Vocations Sunday or Good Shepherd Sunday and the theme this year was ‘Vocations: Witness to the Truth’.

In his message for Vocations Sunday Pope Francis said that:  “A vocation is a fruit that ripens in a well cultivated field of mutual love that becomes mutual service, in the context of an authentic ecclesial life. No vocation is born of itself or lives for itself. A vocation flows from the heart of God and blossoms in the good soil of faithful people, in the experience of fraternal love. Did not Jesus say: “By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another” (Jn 13:35)?”

Johnnie Cusack

Fr. Johnnie Cusack is Director for Vocations, Diocese of Kilmore

Recently Fr. Johnnie wrote of the influence priests had in his formative years in his native Lavey. These men instructed the faithful and administered the sacraments.

He remarked:    “I now realise, that if there were nobody available then with the gift of “Holy Orders” none of this would have happened!”.

adding that when he was ordained in 1963

“I myself was elevated to the Sacramental way-of-life called HOLY ORDERS. This “Sacrament” I had depended on from infancy. Now as Priest, I would ‘make-it-happen’ for all I’d be appointed to serve”.

After 50 years as a priest Fr. Johnnie retired as parish priest but continues to exercise his ministry of Holy Orders.
He combines his work in the parish of Ballinamore with doing what he can to ensure that the call to priesthood and religious life is heard and heeded for future generations.
