Group Director of Mission: Two- year renewable fixed term contract

Saint John of God Hospitaller Services Group, through its subsidiary companies and schools, provides a range of health, social care and education services for children, adolescents and adults in Ireland, Great Britain, and Malawi.  We work in partnership with government departments, health and educational authorities, and other statutory and voluntary agencies in each of those countries.

Our mission is to carry forward the values and heritage entrusted to us by the Order of Saint John of God and its founder. The role of the Group Director of Mission is to help sustain and further our cultural and historical traditions in line with our values and ethos as a ministry of the Catholic Church. This role, reporting to the Group CEO, has oversight responsibilities for pastoral care programmes, the development of ministerial and lay chaplaincy, and the upholding and monitoring of established healthcare ethical standards.

Responsibilities

  • Developing and supporting induction and information programs for application across the Group in support of our heritage and catholic ethos
  • Developing processes for ensuring our SJOG ethos and values, including Hospitality, are practiced in all our activities.
  • Developing standards for pastoral care throughout our services
  • Monitoring and reporting on compliance with pastoral care standards
  • Designing and approving information programmes in biomedical and Hospitaller healthcare ethics
  • Ensuring that the Codes of Biomedical and Healthcare ethical standards, as established by the Board of Sponsors are observed throughout the Group.
  • Providing support to the Boards and Company Executives on ethical decision making
  • Establish and maintain relationships with stakeholders including the bishops of the respective dioceses, and the CEOs of the group companies.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate should have a qualification in theology or philosophy at master’s degree level and should have experience and evidence of achievement relevant to the responsibilities of the role. Consideration may be given to candidates that are willing to undertake a master’s degree in theology or philosophy upon appointment to the role.

  • High level of conceptual skills to support the migration from religious to lay leadership.
  • Collaborative and communication skills, with the ability to work with colleagues at all levels and with external organisations, including media.
  • Experience in developing content to be presented to colleagues for learning and communication purposes.
  • Sensitivity and the ability to deal with varying levels of commitment to values or the Catholic ethos.
  • Mature and trustworthy and well-grounded in Catholic teachings and Human Rights, especially for those with an intellectual and or mental disability.
  • Excellent listener and communicator, with maturity and personal confidence.
  • A strong moral compass that ensures the ethical values of Saint John of God are maintained
