Very Rev. James Cannon Brady, parish priest of Annagh was responsible for co-ordinating the building of the church of the Immaculate Conception, Belturbet. The building contractors engaged were C. Creedon & Son, Newmarket, Dublin. The architect was Simon Leonard of Messrs Byrne & Son, Dublin.

The site for the church, formerly an orchard, was given to the parish by the Sisters of Mercy. There was also an additional small area of ground made available for the site following negotiations with the Masonic Lodge. Enclosed in the foundation stone is stone from the grotto at Lourdes, a relic of Pope Pius X and clay from the catacombs, Rome.

The foundation stone was laid on 3rd October 1954 – the Marian Year – with the dedication of the church carried out almost two years later by the most Rev. Austin Quinn. There is a Marian grotto in the church grounds. The architectural style of the church is Hiberno-Romanesque. The original St. Mary’s Church was built of stone from the pre-1834 bridge that spanned the river Erne at Kilconny.
