
Msgr Michael Cooke
It is with regret that we announce the death of Msgr. Michael Cooke peacefully at home surrounded by his loving family.
Monsignor Michael Cooke was born on 4th February 1940 in the Parish of Cavan. He received his early education at De La Salle National School, Cavan, before attending St Patrick’s College, Cavan, and later St Patrick’s College, Maynooth, where he studied for the priesthood. He was ordained to the priesthood in Cavan Cathedral on 20th June 1965.
Following his ordination, Monsignor Michael began his priestly ministry as Curate in Drumlease, to which he was appointed on 7th August 1965. In June 1968, he was appointed Curate in Kilmainhamwood, before moving to Ballinagh on 21st August 1971. In August 1986, he was appointed Curate in Crosserlough, where he ministered faithfully for a number of years.
On 9th September 1995, Monsignor Michael was appointed Parish Priest of Drumlease. Three years later, on 22nd August 1998, he became Parish Priest and Vicar Forane of Killasnett–Manorhamilton. In August 2008, he was appointed P.F. and V.G. of Belturbet, where he continued his dedicated pastoral service.
Monsignor Michael retired from active ministry in August 2015, bringing to a close many decades of faithful service to the people of the Diocese. Even in retirement, however, he continued to serve the Church generously and was appointed Director of the Diaconate Programme on 1st September 2016. Throughout his life and ministry, Monsignor Michael was known for his commitment, pastoral care, and faithful dedication to the priesthood.
