Bishop Leo, in his address, complimented and congratulated all the recipients on what he hoped is the beginning of a life long habit of service to others through their contributions to their parishes and wider communities. He reminded them of President John F. Kennedy, the first Catholic President of the United States of America, who in his inaugural speech as President appealed to the idealism of the Americans, and especially young Americans, when he famously said: ‘Ask not what your country can do for you, ask what you can do for your country’.

Fergal Flanagan

In his keynote address Fergal Flanagan, Cavan Under 21 Captain, spoke from his personal perspective of being a young person and a footballer, who is also committed to his faith.  He likened the commitment needed to have success on the field of play to the commitment the young people had shown by participating in the awards.  He said that very often, young people are portrayed in a negative light in today’s world but that the John Paul II Awards reflected very positively on the goodness and the contribution young people make to parish and community.

The Bishop paid tribute to the generosity and the initiative of the Knights of St Columbanus in funding and promoting this initiative.  He thanked all the leaders, teachers, priests and parish personnel who mentored the young people and guided them in carrying out the work they undertook. He reminded them that their contribution was also crucial to the success of the project.

Bishop Leo paid tribute to Clare Coyle, former Diocesan Youth Officer, for her work in initiating the project for the past two years. He thanked Fr. Enda Murphy, who continues the work as Director of Youth Ministry and Pastoral Services, wishing him well in his new role.
