The first church in this area appears as a ruin on the 1690 map of Loughtee. It was replaced by a mud wall church at Termon Cross in 1785 and this in turn was replaced by a thatched building in 1810, which survived the famine era.

In 1870 the barn-type church was built along the road recently constructed as a famine relief project. The belfry and curate’s house were completed in 1883.
The bell, baptismal font, the 1810 date-stone and the altar bell are incorporated into and in use today in the present church.

The foundation stone of the present Church of St. Mary’s was laid by Bishop Austin Quinn and Bishop Francis J. MacKiernan in 1973. The new building was blessed and opened by Bishop MacKiernan in 1974. It was re-roofed and extensively renovated in 1992.
